Windows Server 2012 and 2012 R2 End of Support & Options

Microsoft will end support for Windows Server 2012 and Windows Server 2012 R2. On 10th October 2023, support for these server operating systems will be officially ended by Microsoft. This means that after this date, users will no longer have access to security updates, bug fixes, technical support or online technical content updates for these versions of Windows Server. This news raises important questions for organisations that still rely on these systems. What are the options for the future and how can your business ensure you will stay secure and up to date?

If upgrading to a newer version of Windows Server is not an option, users have the option to use Extended Security Updates (ESUs) for up to three years. These updates are available in Azure or can be purchased for on-premises deployments.

Windows Server 2012 and 2012 R2 End of Support & Options

What are the options for your business for the future?

Migrate to Microsoft Azure

One of the most attractive options is to migrate the applications and databases to Microsoft Azure. Customers who choose this route can take advantage of up to three years of free Extended Security Updates (ESUs) after the end of support date. This applies to several Azure services, including Azure VMware Solution, Azure Stack HCI, Virtual Machines, and Dedicated Host. Also organisations can take advantage of the Azure Hybrid Benefit to save costs on their Windows Server and SQL Server licenses.

Upgrade to Windows Server 2022 on-premises

For organisations that prefer to stay on-premises an upgrade to Windows Server 2022 is a good choice. This new version of Windows Server offers the latest security features and performance improvements. It also offers the option to purchase Extended Security Updates (ESUs) for Windows Server 2012. This allows users to receive security updates for up to three years, renewable annually until 13th October 2026.

Azure Arc for security and management

Organisations purchasing ESUs for Windows Server 2012 can use Azure Arc to automatically deploy these updates on-premises. Azure Arc provides an integration to extend Azure security and management to the on-premises environment, allowing organisations to enjoy the benefits of the cloud even while remaining partially on-premises.
