On Linux, the Microsoft Teams app will disappear. From now on you will have to use a new Progressive Web App if you want to use Microsoft Teams on Linux. The MS Teams Progressive Web App is now available for Linux.
Microsoft Teams Linux app discontinued
Whereas Linux users used to be able to use a Microsoft Teams App, they will now have to use Microsoft Teams in the browser in the future. The Linux app will be replaced by a Progressive Web App (PWA).
However, the new Microsoft Teams PWA can be installed like an app. Moreover, Linux users do not have to fear that there will be fewer functionalities in the PWA compared to the old app. The new PWA can still offer advanced functions.
The advantage of the PWA in Linux
Making it available as a PWA allows Microsoft to quickly upgrade new Teams features. The new functions can also be quickly made available to people who use Teams with Linux in this way.
There will no longer be a gap between the functions update in Microsoft Teams for Windows & Linux. The Progressive Web App will be made available for both Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge.
Features in the new Microsoft Teams Linux PWA
The PWA provides access to more features such as custom backgrounds, Gallery view, comments, the “raise your hand” feature in meetings, and large Gallery and Together mode views. It also offers desktop-like app features such as system notifications for chats and channels.
A dock icon with controls is also available. Teams PWA also enables automatic application launches and easy access to system app permissions.
Microsoft’s Endpoint Manager
The new PWA for Linux can be managed using Microsoft’s Endpoint Manager. A so-called conditional access configuration can be used. This means that the Microsoft Edge browser will be used for the new PWA developed by Microsoft.
Linux users also don’t have to worry about the difference between the new PWA and the old Linux app. For the time being, the new Microsoft Teams PWA can be used in a kind of desktop-like environment.
Ability to install the new PWA
It is now possible to install the PWA. You do this via a symbol on the right side of the address bar. If you use the Microsoft Edge browser, you can also anchor the PWA. You do this by choosing “Install this site as an app” in the “Apps” menu.
