Microsoft Edge will soon include a free built-in VPN

We have already highlighted the importance of using VPN in a previous blog. We also explained how to set up VPN for Windows 10. With a lot of people still working from home having a good VPN for extra security is vital for you organisation. Now Microsoft Edge will also soon have a built in free VPN for you to use.

About Microsoft Edge VPN

Microsoft has consistently tried to get more people to use Edge. Some of the ways it’s pursued that goal have been less well-received than others, but the latest effort to do so could be a useful addition to the browser. Microsoft have now revealed that it is adding a free built-in VPN service called Edge Secure Network to its web browser.

The company says the tool will encrypt your internet connection. You can use that functionality to protect your data from your internet service provider. As with most VPNs, you can also use Edge Secure Network to mask your location, giving you access to services that might otherwise be blocked in the country you live or visit. Interestingly, Microsoft isn’t specifically referring to the new feature as a VPN; but like an iCloud Private Relay, it works the same way.

Restrictions Microsoft Edge VPN

Edge’s secure network will likely be powered by Cloudflare, one of the most trusted DNS hosts in the industry, and aims to protect your device and sensitive data while you browse. This feature, which is in the early stages of development, is available to select Edge Canary users. It is not a full-fledged VPN service offered in competing browsers like Opera.

If you find yourself traveling frequently, chances are Edge Secure Network won’t replace a paid VPN. The function limits you to 1 GB data usage per month. It’s also worth noting that you need a Microsoft account to use the service. Microsoft has yet to begin testing the VPN. But once the feature is available, you can enable it from Edge’s three-dot icon. A new option called “Secure Network” will enable the VPN. When you are done browsing, it will automatically turn off again.
