Tips for making Windows 10 faster

Remove programs from your start up menu

One of the most common problems causing Windows 10 to perform slow is that a lot of programs are running simultaneously. This problem can occur quite quickly with lots of software you might not even use on a regular basis. All you need to do is to make sure that these software packages do not start automatically and your PC will start up a lot quicker.

You just simply need to start the Windows Task Manager to be able to manage these programs.  Either right click the task bar or Windows button and select the task manager. If you don’t see any tabs just click ‘More details’. Then just click the Startup tab to show you all the programs involved in the startup progress of Windows 10. You can prevent any program from being executed at startup by right clicking and selecting ‘Disable’. You can always change this at a later stage or just simply manually start the software when it is required.

Turn off visual effects

Windows 10 has a lot of visual effects and animations to make to make it look better. However if you are running Windows 10 on older hardware it can have effects on the performance of your computer.

However these visual effects can be switched off. Search in Windows (next to the Windows start button) for sysdm.cpl to open up the System Properties. Click on the tab ‘Advanced’ and underneath ‘Performance’ click on ‘Settings’. Just tick the radio button ‘Adjust for best performance’ or select manually which effects you want to keep switched on.

Use Windows Troubleshooting

Windows has a relatively unknown tool that can investigate and solve performance issues. This tool is called ‘troubleshooting’ and can be accesses via the control panel. Search in Windows (next to the Windows start button) for ‘Control Panel’ and click on ‘Troubleshooting’. Next under System and Security click ‘Run maintenance tasks’ and follow the steps. This trouble shooter tool will find files which are hardly ever used and will identify other issues which can influence your computer performance.

Ask help from the Performance Monitor

The tool Performance Monitor can perform a check on the performance of your Windows 10 system. To access the performance monitor simply type ‘perfmon /report’ in the Windows search bar (next to the Windows start button). This report will give you an in-depth overview of any performance issues which you can examine. For the fastest result click ‘Warning’ under ‘Diagnostic Results’. This will display any issues for example missing drivers, crashing services or other events which require your attention. It can also be useful to view at ‘Resource Overview’. There you can see how CPU, network connections and hard drive are performing with a green light if there are no problems, yellow with potential issues and red if a problem has been detected.

Remove Bloatware

Sometimes the issue slowing down your computer is not Windows 10 but bloatware which are using your processor and system files. Adware and bloatware installed by the manufacturer are the worst as you do not realise they are there but they will slow down your system. You can use an excellent free program called Malwarebytes Anti-Malware to remove bloatware and any other spyware. The free version will search for malicious files on request, the paid version will automatically scan to prevent further infections.
